Santander

Santander is the capital of the autonomous community of Cantabria. The town has been expanded by reclaiming land from the sea, and stretches towards the hills to the west. Its inhabitants make a living from tertiary administrative activities, trade and tourism. Unlike other major Spanish towns, Santander does not have an El Corte Ingles department store. The outskirts of the town are dominated by three superstores, one of which (Eroski) has a sizeable shopping arcade: "Valle Real". The Carrefour superstore broadened its range of stores in 2001 by enlarging its mall.
Santander es la capital de la comunidad autonóma de Cantábria. El desarrollo urbano de la ciudad se hizo ganando tierras al mar y creciendo hacia las montañas del oeste. Sus habitantes viven de actividades administrativas, del comercio y turismo. Al contrario que las demás ciudades españolas de importancia, El Corte Inglés no está implantado en ella. La periferia está dominada por 3 hipermercados, de los cuales el « Valle Real » (Eroski) ocupa una gran superficie. El hipermercado Carrefour se amplió en el 2001 aumentando su abanico de tiendas.
