- The City of Brno is located in the southeast of the Czech Republic, close to the borders of Austria and Slovakia. It is the second largest city in the Czech Republic, with 384,000 inhabitants (3.7% of the population) and is the metropolis of South Moravia. Brno is also the second largest center of education in the Czech Republic, being home to six universities and over 30,000 students. The 3 main shopping centre developments are all located to the south of the city, Olympia Centrum, Carrefour Futurum Centre and Ikea Shopping Park. The downtown high streets of Namesti Svobody, Masarykova and Ceska are very popular streets and can be compared to those in Prague. August 2001 saw the opening of Velky Spalicek shopping centre, virtually right in the city centre, anchored by a Palace Cinema.
