Aachen is right next to the Dutch and Belgian border. Aachen has developed with the Dutch city Heerlen the first cross-border industrial park (Aventis) in Europe. The city is lucky being more and more in a central European position: on one hand near to the European nerve centre Brussels and with non-stop connections to Paris and London. On the other hand in front of the gates of Cologne and the Ruhr. Aachen is connected to the French TGV-net. The distance to Paris shrink to three hours travelling by train. The airport Maastricht with connections to all European centres is 20 minutes by car away from Aachen. Regarding the retailing sector, the city benefits strongly from the cross-border traffic with Belgium and the Netherlands. The city centre is largely car-free. Meanwhile, with nearby car-parks, the visitor is familiar with the heavy pedestrian traffic.

Die Stadtmitte ist weitgehend autofrei. Aber mittlerweile mit gut zugängigen Parkhäusern versorgt, hat sich der Besucher an den regen Fußgängerverkehr gewohnt
