Nyfer heeft voor het eerst in een stedenvergelijking de veertig grootste steden van Nederland met elkaar vergeleken aan de hand van een aantal criteria, zoals het aantal banen en het gemiddelde inkomen in de gemeenten. Ook bereikbaarheid, het aanbod van culturele voorzieningen, de aanwezigheid van monumenten en veiligheid, wegen mee bij de beoordeling. Amersfoort is één van de economisch meest vitale steden met een grote arbeidparticipatie en een hoog gemiddeld inkomen. Amersfoort heeft het op drie na hoogste gemiddelde besteedbare inkomen per inwoner (van de 25 steden met meer dan 100.000 inwoners). Slechts weinig Amersfoorters zijn aangewezen op de bijstand.
