Münster’s remarkable buying power stems from its role as a regional centre with 1.5mn people. Münster´s income per person amounts to 12% over the regional average, retailing concentration ciffre: 125.9%, turnover index: 139.1%, and its unemployment rate is also below the national average. Münster´s commerce generated sales of 1,77 bn. EUR in 1999. Following the general nationwide trend, commerce, with an exhaustive need for more space, is located on the outskirts of the city. While the inner city provides adequate space for the normal and more exclusive retailers. Here the shopping centre Sparkassen Arcades will be opened in 2004/2005. Another project is planned at Stubengasse and will be opened in 2005. Many tourists visit Münster to experience its history and culture. The city also attracts many day shoppers from the north of Germany and the neighbouring Netherlands, especially during the summer and leading up to christmas.

Von der "Mitte" Prinzipalmarkt aus gehen die wichtigtsten Einkaufsstrassen wie Ludgeristrasse und Salzstrasse, an denen auch die einzigen nicht "überdimensionierten" Kaufhäuser Karstadt und Kaufhof liegen, ab und sind durch kleine Strassenzüge miteinander verbunden. Münster ist ein Oberzentrum mit 1,5 Mio. Menschen. Kaufkraft: 111,8%, Umsatzkennziffer: 139.1%, EH-Zentralität: 125,9%. Arbeitslosenquote liegt unter dem Bundesschnitt. 1999 wurden Gesamtumsätze in Höhe v. 1,77 Mrd. erziehlt. Münster bewahrt sich den Charme einer Einkausfstadt auch in der Zukunft indem es Shoppingcenter außerhalb des Citycenters fernhält und innerhalb neue SC entwickelt, wie z.B. der Sparkassenneubau. Ein weiteres Projekt ist an der Stubengasse im Innenstadtbereich für 2005 geplant.
