  • Manchester is a regional centre with a district population of 393,000 and 2.4 million people living within 12 miles of the city centre. However it has a wider catchment being the capital city of the north west of England. It has over the past decade undergone a major renaissance with large areas of the city centre undergoing redevelopment. Manchester’s primary mass market shopping is on Market Street, and within the recently extendedArndale Shopping Centre making it the largest ever in-town scheme in the UK. Traditionally quality retailing was been based around the pedestrianised areas of King Street, St Ann Street / St Ann’s Square. To the south west of King Street there is the new Allied London development known as Spinningfields. This is a contemporary business district extending from Deansgate with 2.37 million sq ft of new office space. Its retail and leisure components have been designed to create a new city centre quarter.
