  • Glasgow, is the largest city in Scotland, with excellent communications. Nearby major roads include the M8, M77, M74, M73 and M80 with Glasgow Airport located approximately 16 kms to the west of the City. Two mainline railway stations serve Glasgow; Central station, which runs services to London Kings Cross and Queen Street station, which runs services into London St Pancras with a journey time of just over five hours. Glasgow was ranked second behind the West End of London in the Experian Retail Rankings of 2003 due to the diversity of the retail offer and the wide range of department stores, designer clothes boutiques and national multiples. Glasgow has an above average number of 18-29 year olds and an affluent catchment with significantly above average numbers of Well-off Workers, Affluent Urbanites and Better-off Executives. Although the demographics show that 51.4% of the population is economically inactive, compared to a national average of 38.3%, the retail spend on fashion in Glasgow is extremely high when compared to Edinburgh, where the catchment is wealthy, but does not spend as freely on fashion. The retail provision in the city is concentrated on a ‘Z’ shaped route from Sauchiehall Street in the north, along Buchanan Street and Argyle Street in the south. Buchanan Galleries, a major city centre shopping centre is situated at the junction of Buchanan Street and Sauchiehall Street.
