Stuttgart is growing quickly and is to receive a subterranean main railway station incorporating a new megacentre of 100 hectares in area (24,000 jobs, residential accommodation for 11,000 people). It will offer a blend of residential, shopping, entertainment and services, which will be unique in Europe (www.stuttgart21.de). The project is located directly on the extension of the axis formed by Königstrasse, starting from the station. But it is currently highly disputed and a referendum will be organized in the coming months. Retail trade is concentrated on the city centre/Königstrasse, along which there are department stores which form a big draw to shoppers. Schlossplatz is on the central axis. The high-quality Breuninger department store has a special position direct on Marktplatz.
