Midway between Paris and Lille, the capital of Picardy, has successfully carried out an economic shift over the last few years. The town, which has a strong working-class tradition, has made a major investment in new communication technologies, generating the creation of high-income jobs. The town centre is still dominated by the Rue des Trois Cailloux. In view of the short distances involved, the three existing shopping hubs on the town's outskirts share the catchment area in a perceptibly balanced way, even though Auchan is the leading one.In view to balance the commercial equipments between the south and the north of the conurbation, the local authorities now refuse all openings superior to 1.000 sqm in the southern part of the city.

Afin de rééquilibrer l'équilibre commercial entre nord et sud, Amiens Métropole bloque désormais tout projet supérieur à 1.000 m2 au sud d'Amiens.
