A university town, Grenoble also accommodates many companies operating in high-tech sectors which attract highly-qualified staff (with high incomes), who are also drawn by the town''s proximity to ski resorts. The town centre of Grenoble can be considered as "two-headed": the "traditional" town centre, and the GrandPlace shopping centre, which serves as a second town centre for the inhabitants of the town''s southern districts. After the inauguration of the tram system, the "traditional" town centre has undergone perceptible changes. Streets which had hitherto been of secondary importance (Avenue Alsace Lorraine) became more attractive.The "historic" district, particularly around the Law Courts (Palais de Justice), has suffered as a result of this new urban organization. The Grand'' Place is the only shopping centre of regional scope, and its extension has just been completed. Apart from the Grand'' Place, the Carrefour–Meylan shopping centre still preserves its dominant position.
Ville universitaire, Grenoble accueille aussi de nombreuses entreprises évoluant dans les secteurs de pointe qui attirent des personnels hautement qualifiés (à revenus supérieurs) également séduits par la proximité des stations de ski.On peut considérer le centre ville de Grenoble comme bicéphale : d''un côté le Centre Commercial Grand Place qui tient lieu notamment pour les habitants des quartiers sud de centre ville "bis", de l''autre le centre ville "traditionnel". Ce dernier a subi, suite à l''implantation du tramway, des mutations sensibles. Des axes jusque là secondaires (avenue Alsace Lorraine) ont vu leur attractivité renforcée.Le quartier "historique", notamment autour du Palais de Justice, a souffert de cette nouvelle organisation urbaine. En dehors de Grand'' Place, seul centre commercial de taille régionale, dont l''extension vient de s''achever, le Centre Commercial Carrefour Meylan conserve sa position dominante sur sa zone de challandise de proximité
