A university town, Rennes has been able to attract a substantial number of companies, generating the creation of skilled jobs. One of France's largest towns, it has one of the highest rates of population growth. The municipality is currently implementing several urban development projects in order to accommodate 60 000 new inhabitants by 2010. The introduction of the VAL in March 2002 (metro) made it possible to attract new customers to the historical town centre. Rennes can be considered to have 2 town centres : the historical town centre while another, more recent, has developed around the Colombia S.C. Streets which link them have known an interesting retail development. The periphery accomodate strong shopping hubs (like Alma which will be extended). Several projects dedicated to leisure and housewares were recently opened north of the conurbation : Cap Malo, Village la Forme Decathlon, and Ikea.
Ville universitaire, Rennes a attiré de nombreuses entreprises, générant la création d'emplois qualifiés. La croissance de sa population est l'une des plus élevées des grandes villes françaises. La Municipalité mène actuellement plusieurs projets d'aménagement urbain d'accueillir à l'horizon 2010, 60 000 nouveaux habitants. La mise en service du VAL en mars 2002, a permis de drainer de nouvelles franges de clientèle vers le Centre Ville. On peut estimer qu'il existe 2 centres villes, le centre ville historique, l'autre autour du C.C. Colombia. Les rues qui relient les deux pôles connaissent un interessant développement commercial. La périphérie accueille d'important pôles commerciaux (comme Alma qui va faire l'objet d'une extension). Plusieurs projets principalement axés sur l'équipement de la maison et les loisirs ont récemment ouvert au nord de l'agglomération : Cap Malo, Village la Forme Decathlon, ainsi que Ikea.
