- In 1953 the Government decreed Gatwick as London's second airport and today Gatwick is the busiest single runway airport in the world, the second largest airport in the UK and the seventh busiest international airport in the world. Around 90 airlines operate from Gatwick's two terminals, serving around 200 destinations. In 2005 Gatwick handled 32.6 million passengers. In 2013/2014, the retail area of South Terminal was revamped and now accomodates 20 new shops including the largest Zara airport store. Gatwick is located 28 miles south of central London and the best mode of transport into London is vis the direct train link into Victoria Station. This avoids the heavily congested road network. Shopping and eating facilities are fairly standard in both terminals.
