- Eldon Square, which opened in 1976, was one of the first examples of mixed-use city centre regeneration. It accomodates over 150 shops, including a John Lewis department store and a large choice of cafés and restaurants. It is linked to Elden Garden shopping arcade. An extension of some 38.100 sqm "Eldon Square South" opened in February 2010. It is anchored by Debenhams (16.250 sqm on 4 levels) and 22 new large stores (including River Island, Topshop-Topman, Newlook which relocated in larger units).
