Highcross Leicester (The Shires)

The two-level, 46.400 sqm shopping centre "The Shires" opened in 1991 and was anchored by Debenhams, Waterstone's, USC, Uniqlo, Next, House of Fraser, Rackhams, Early Learning Centre and Mothercare. It has a central location which ensures a large footfall. Its extension of some 61.000 sqm opened in September 2008 more than doubled its size to reach some 100.000 sqm and the centre was then named "Highcross Leicester". The new anchor are a John Lewis department store (22.000 sqm), a 12-screen multiplex cinema, Next (transfered from the Shires from 650 sqm to 4.645 sqm). Lacoste, Zara, Hugo Boss, Reiss opened there their first stores in Leicester. The scheme also includes some 120 apartments, creating a new district. Developers /investors : Hammerson (60%)/ BIS Company Ltd (40%). In September 2014, Hammerson acquired the BIS stake for 180 M £. In 2018, Hammerson sold a 50% stake to a M&G Real Estate (for an asian investor) for £236m.
