Built in the 30's, Firenze S.Novella railway station is one of the 13 "grandi stazioni" to be refurbished and expanded.. With the construction of a new station "alta velocita" designed by N.Foster located in the district Belfiore-Marcelli, Santa Maria Novella would have been dedicated to the regional and local traffic. But the initial project was abandoned as it was highly disputed. The new shopping arcade with 40 shops was completed end 2014.
