- The Victoria Centre was opened in 1972 as one of the first new generation shopping centres to be built in the UK. It has over 120 shops and is rated as one of the top 15 shopping malls in the UK. Its two main anchor stores are John Lewis and House of Fraser. It also has a large indoor market. Victoria Centre represents 30% of Nottingham's retail offer and welcomes 23 M customers a year. A project for a 46.500 sqm extension (for a new department store, a 10-screen cinema and some 50 shops) was launched in 2011. In the meantime, a major redevelopment scheme of its main competitor Broadmarsh was under way. But the two projects will be remodelled jointly as CSC (now Intu), the owner of Victoria Centre acquired Broadmarsh in 2011. The dining area will be remodelled by mid-2015 with the arrivals of new restaurants like Tortilla or Ed's Easy Diner. Another extension is planned in the future (after Broadmarsch's extension).
