- One-level shopping centre situated downtown Stockport. Originally built in 1965 as an open street, it was extensively refurbished and extended in 1995. (Developer : Hammerson). Hammerson sold it in 2003 to a private property company (Stockport Holdings Ltd). In 2009, the centre was put into receivership and is now managed by GVA. Merseyway welcomes some 14 million visitors a year, its catchement area covering most of South Manchester and North Cheshire areas. It is very close from the M60 and the A6 roads. Its main anchors are Primark (which replaced the Westgate department store in 2011), Marks & Spencer, Bhs, Next. Among the latest arrivals : River Island which took over the Woolworth unit in 2011. The Bridgefield project which would have compete with Merseyway was given up by Lend Lease in 2008.
